College Financial Aid Administrators 7 step guide

It is absolutely necessary to talk with a financial aid administrator at your chosen college. He or she will be able to inform you of essential information about your financial aid package as well as provide you with other financial aid options. Questions that you should ask during your visit are the following:

  • What will my financial aid package look like?

This is the most important question you can ask. Learn about the different combinations of aid that are typically found in financial aid packages.
What percent of the package is typically loans? Work-study?  Grants and scholarships? This question is best answered after your FAFSA form has been received and reviewed by the financial aid office.

  • Remember, some combinations of financial aid are not allowed by the NCAA.
  • How is unmet financial need handled?

Alternative financing sources, such as monthly payment plans, exist for college costs that cannot be covered by financial aid.
Find out if credit can be earned through Advanced Placement Programs whereby a student does not have to take a particular course (and therefore not pay for it) because he or she is already proficient in the area.

  • How does outside funding affect my financial aid package?

Find out how your financial aid package will be affected if you receive a scholarship or grant from an outside source.

  • How does the status of a family impact family contribution?

You want to know what the liability is for a parent who does not have custody. What if a parent remarries—does the step parent assume liability and how does his or her income impact funding? Find out about the impact of assets jointly held by student and parent(s) or trust funds the student has.

  • What are the limits of institutional aid?

If, for example, an institution only has $1 million in aid available, what happens when all of this money is allotted? Is there no more aid available? Is there a per student limit on financial aid?

  • Is there departmental funding?

Ask about funding through your major department.

  • What is taxable in your award, if anything?

What will be taxed besides tuition, books and educational supplies?
